Get this from a library. The metal craftsman's handbook: an illustrated dictionary of metalworking. [William T Squires]. Great book for the new person getting started with metal work.

All though this book is not % completely comprehensive, it does provide plenty of information in an easy to read/understand format. The cartoon like hand drawn diagrams are easy to read as well.
